Kristen Tordella-Williams is an interdisciplinary artist and arts educator based in the American South. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including a recent exhibition at a villa in Berlin. Tordella-Williams has been an artist in residence at Salem Art Works, the Ateliers im Alten Schlachthof, and the TIDES Institute & Museum of Art. In 2023, Kristen’s piece 40 Burnt Books was selected as the second place awardee at the ArtFields competition in Lake City, SC. 

In her research, Tordella-Williams examines the impact of personal and communal labor on our environmental and physical landscape. Her work explores themes related to social justice, identity, gender, and memory, using materials commonly found in historical archives, hardware stores, and recycling bins. Her art practice is characterized by a focus on the impact of labor on our lives, using materials such as iron casting and hand papermaking, to create works that visually and conceptually represent layers of memory, materiality, and process. Tordella-Williams creates a dialogue between labor, memory, and identity in order to highlight the impact of our actions on our environments and collective culture. By gathering and re-interpreting the remnants of labor, she creates thought-provoking interdisciplinary artworks that invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences and the residue they leave behind.

Tordella-Williams holds a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and an MFA in Sculpture and Dimensional Studies from Alfred University. She is currently the President of the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance and an Associate Professor of Sculpture at Auburn University in Alabama.
